Our Goal for Learning Neurocritical Care

We want students and residents to to understand the basics of neurocritical care and critical care. Our goal is not to teach you every neurologic disease and treatment of each, but more so the approach to patients and critical care in the NeuroICU. Students and residents should be capable of rounding on their patients, examining patients with Neurocritical Care conditions, performing basic coma evaluation, and coming up with plans for these patients in a multidisciplinary team format. Throughout the month we will teach bedside basics to neurocritical care as well as critical care. Do not be afraid to speak up and ask questions and be curious as we have additional resources for interested learners.

Phanor Perot Neurosciences ICU

Dr. Julio Chalela was hired in 2005 as the first neurointensivist after completing fellowships in both vascular neurology then neurocritical care. He became the first and only medical director to serve the ICU. In 2011 the ICU was dedicated to Dr. Phanor Perot, one of the greats of neurosurgery, a past chairman for the department of neurosurgery and dedicated researcher in spinal cord injury. See below for more history about the department of neurosurgery at MUSC.

The art of patient care… is caring for the patient.”
